Courage Best; Fuller's London Pride; Greene King Abbot; Marston's Pedigree; Shepherd Neame Spitfire; Weston's Organic and Vintage cider; up to five guests.
With booths around the outside containing prints of old Highgate, together with plenty of other story boards (read about Swearing on the Horns) this pub is a mini history lesson in itself. Bears all the hallmarks of an early JDW conversion and with a slient TV screen, it was the buzz of conversation that gave a very welcoming atmosphere. It's a large place featuring a beer garden, no-smoking area and a dining-only area. As well as this there is a theatre - Upstairs at The Gatehouse, details of which can be found at www.upstairsatthegatehouse.com, separate phone 020 8340 3488.

WOODMAN
414 Archway Road, N6 5UA
Courage Best; Wells Bombardier
This is a pleasant local offering 2 real ales. It is traditionally decorated with wood panelling, dark wooden floors and leaded windows (retaining that yellow/smokey stain that will soon be a thing of the past) to give that pared-back feel. Three rooms have been knocked through into one, but remain as separate areas. The bar has Sky sports on the big screen, playing silently at the time of visit. There are also fruit machines. There is a separate room which is a drinking area with tables, chairs and stools, and a third with two pool tables. Large patio garden. Upmarket, short, modern menu (e.g. Spanish style octopus soup) but it's not pricey - a filling three course meal can be had for £14. Wheelchair facilities. Handy for Archway tube.

WRESTLERS
98 North Road, N6 4AA
020 8340 4297
16.30-midnight Mon-Thu (01.00am Fri); 12-01.00am Sat; 12-23 Sun
Fullers London Pride; Greene King IPA, Abbott; Young's Bitter
This is a very attractive and popular old pub, dating from 1547 but rebuilt in Tudor style in 1921, with wood panelling and an old fireplace. Food is served on Sunday Lunchtimes only (14-16.30) - when it is packed. It is one of the pubs occasionally used for the Swearing of Horns ceremony welcoming strangers to Highgate. Much of the 1920s feel remains although the partitions have been removed and the current tenant has installed subdued wall lighting with Picasso inspired parchment shades. This is a locals' pub with board games available. TV only used for special events.
