Just up the road from Stoke Newington station, this is a large, imposing street corner pub built in robust pub style. The outside columns and bow windows resonate from a different age of construction – one of confidence and expression. The seating around is around a large central bar, there is a splendid Truman’s mirror over a fine fireplace and an unusual carved, wooden frieze-like mirror on the back wall. There is a live DJ Fri/Sat nights, an upstairs function room (available for hire), free wi-fi. Food, reasonably priced, is served Tue to Sat 16.00 - 22.00 and Sun 12.00 - 19.00, see website for more detail. Music quiz Tue evenings.

Recently reopened under its old name Jolly Butchers. With its prominent red painted exterior this is a one-room pub with large clear picture windows, and some half-moon upper windows retaining their coloured glass. An unusual mix of church pew seats with prayer book slots around large tables, an open kitchen and a bar featuring up to seven cask beers and three ciders and perries at any time. Thornbridge and Dark Star beers feature heavily plus three ciders/perries. Their website lists forthcoming beers and ciders (which can change regularly so be sure to check if you're looking for something specific) and food, which is served Mon - Fri 17.00 - 22.00, Sat 12.00 - 22.00, Sun (roast) 12.00 - 21.00 from a mixed menu of classic pub dishes and some which are less so. Nicely presented beer and cider menu with tasting notes. Interesting range of bottled beers many imported together with some rarer tap beers from Brugse Zot, Meantime, de Koninck, Erdinger and Schlenkerla. Originally Jolly Butchers, then Father Teds, then Bar Stokies. Now back to its original name.

There are some magnificent red lions set into the front of the building. An inn called the Red Lion stood on this site in 1697 and behind it used to be the local lock-up and fire station. It went through a thorough refurbishment in 1988 when it became the Magpie and Stump, part of the Saxon Inns chain and became the Tup in 1998. Upstairs is The Lion's Den - a live music and entertainment venue, open mic, alternative cabaret, comedy and music. Secluded garden. Large sports screen. Quiz nights either Mon or Tues, phone to check.

MURPHYS TAVERNS
11 Oldhill Street, N16 6LD
The British Oak was a run-down but distinguished late Victorian public house marked on the 1894 Ordnance Survey map of Stamford Hill. When it ceased to operate as a pub, it lay vacant for two years until Planning Application was submitted in 2001 to convert it into a jewellery workshop, employing nineteen people, with two flats above. Within the year, a second application was submitted to turn it into a ‘community centre and school’ for the Beltz Orthodox community – operating through the ‘Before Trust’. Approval was given for this use in 2002. In September 2002, the Trustees of the school authorised the demolition of the pub building. A letter from Tom McCourt of Hackney Planning Department confirmed that this was illegal. Despite this, it is understood that a school is now close to completion.

OLD HENRY'S FREEHOUSE
2 St Jude Street, N16 8JT
Fuller's London Pride and a rotating guest.
Bateman's Hop Bine Bitter was on at the time of the visit and the manager is keen to try different beers. It's a large, friendly, L-shaped, single-bar pub with a fireplace and plenty of paraphenalia decorating the place. There are two sports screens, darts, and occasional live music on a small raised area at the end of the room. There was a third handpump not in use at the time. Traditional pub-grub menu with offers at various times giving good value, served Mon - Sat 12.00 - 15.00 and 17.00 - 21.00. Had a real locals/community feel to it. Part of a small chain run independently. Function room.

PALATINE
97 Stoke Newington Road, N16 8BX
Sun - Thu 17.00 - 23.30, Fri/Sat 12.00 - 02.0
Two cask beers from either Brodies, Ha'penny or Redemption
In the process of undegoing another make-over but hopefully this one will stick being of far more interest to the cask beer drinker. It is to start a new lease of life as The Palatine. At the time of writing the plan is to introduce two cask beers from London brewers such as Redemption, Brodies and Ha’penny. In time, as sales hopefully develop, others may be introduced with a possible slant on ales from Scotland. As a consequence the pub should have a very different feel so try it out
Started as Hare and Hounds, then Krystals, then Tonic/Satchmos

Black Sheep Bitter, Fuller's London Pride, Weston's Traditional Scrumpy
Built around 1880 by the philanthropist Thomas Arno which used to be run by the famous Mancini boxing family. Has now transmogrified itself into a fairly typical gastro with all that goes with it, including food that could not be described as inexpensive. However, drinkers are not made to feel unwelcome in this L-shaped single roomed establishment with a zinc metal topped bar. There is an outside drinking area but it has to close at 8.00 to prevent noise disturbing neighbours. At the time of the visit only one ale was on (apparently supplies of London Pride were proving very difficult to get hold of!!). Reports on various pub review websites seem to confirm variability of supply.

Courage Best, Fuller's London Pride, Greene King Abbot, Marston's Pedigree plus four rotating guests and Weston's Old Rosie cider
With some fine tiling in the front section and a large skylight at the back, this is a welcome outlet for cask beer. The cider is stored in polypins in a fridge behind the bar. CAMRA Pub of the Season Autumn 2002. Large outside drinking area at the back is, of course, now popular with smokers. Children's license until 20.00 (last food orders an hour before). In existence from 1702 as the Green Dragon and subsequently demolished and rebuilt by Richard Payne from Rochester (hence the name) although it was briefly the Tanners Hall in the 1980s. Cask Marque accredited.

Adnams Bitter; Marston's Pedigree; guest beer
Close to historic Clissold House and park, this is the "gateway" to central Stoke Newington nightlife. This inter-war former Truman's house retains many period features, including distinctive wood panelling which has led to its listing on CAMRA's Regional Inventory of pub interiors. Ideal for lazy Sunday afternoons. En suite accommodation available. Food served 12-14.30 Mon to Fri and 12-16 Sat & Sun. Popular and busy pub quiz on Tuesday nights - can be difficult to get a table if you are not playing. Has been known as such since 1612 but the original inns were on the east junction of Albion Rd and it moved to its present position in 1930 which probably goes a long way to explain the inter-way fabric.

THREE CROWNS
175 Stoke Newington High St, N16 0LM
Harvey's Sussex Bitter, Shepherd Neame Spitfire, Taylor's Landlord
Following a long closure has re-opened with real ale. Retaining much of the original interior (less a few walls), this vast corner pub has returned to its established long term name (which commemorated the visit of King James 1, passing by in 1603 to be crowned King of Scotland, England and Ireland). The corner section fronting onto High Road has fairly conventional wooden tables and chairs for dining or reading at. The Church Street section has a much more vibe bar feel to it with low lighting a bizarre selection of mirrors from the 1700’s to the ‘70’s, lending a surreal feel to the low-lit maroon decor. Large scrubbed pine tables jostle with Chesterfields and church chairs for attention with a throbbing incessant ambient soundtrack that on a bad day has you reaching for the paracetamol in seconds. Good to see the original external metalwork retained and the exterior looking its most normal, if a little dour, for many a year. Like its nearby contemporary the Rochester Castle, the ‘Crowns also features a large vaulted skylight. The bar counter sports a range of dimly lit low hanging lamps. The bar offers three cask beers on a guest basis at an average of £2.75 a pint. The kitchen is open 12-3 with 3-6 for coffee and cakes, dining recommences 6-10 with an upmarket selection of dishes.
Latterly Cafe Lorca/Bar Lorca (from 1995), originally the Cock and Harp, then the Three Crowns, then the Samuel Beckett
