The Clifton makes a welcome return

The Clifton in Clifton Hill, NW8 has made a welcome return to CAMRA's Good Beer Guide.

John Cryne, the local branch chairman said "It's always difficult to choose which pubs should go in the Guide. Throughout the year our members check hundreds of pubs incognito to find those that are selling the most consistent pint of good real ale. We are delighted that the Clifton has made it back into the 2010 Good Beer Guide. It's a great historic pub broken up into a number of drinking areas, each with a different feel, which makes it distinct from so many one roomed pubs that dominate London".

John added "We are also particularly pleased to be able to promote this pub in the Good Beer Guide as St John's Wood is now in a virtual real ale pub desert. We have lost some 50% of our hostelries in the area so it's great to see a pub like this thriving".

The pub is around 200 years old and was originally a hunting lodge. It was used by Edward VII to meet Lilly Langtry and it was then that it reportedly became a hotel as royalty could not visit "pubs". Games varying from Scrabble to Trivial Pursuit are available and the conservatory doubles as a restaurant. An outside seating area is available for summer drinking and smokers.

The Clifton will be given their 2010 Good Beer Guide window sticker at 8pm on Tuesday 8th September where a few pints will be lifted in celebration.
