Bert Field
Bert died unexpectedly of a heart attack on 23 February, aged 76.
Bert, a life-long railwayman, joined CAMRA 11 years ago when he retired, to give himself something to do – and do he did! Although technically a member of South East London Branch, he met Chris Cobbold early on and so became active in South West London Branch and in particular at Battersea Beer Festival. He organised the Glasses Stand for many years and he will be hard to replace. He was always amongst the first to arrive in the morning, having breakfast with Chris and Dave Plackett to look forward to the day’s efforts. Bert also really enjoyed working at London Drinker Festival where, as well as helping with the glasses, he used to chop up the French bread with gusto, as marked by all the blue plasters on his fingers! The last time I spoke to him, he said how much he was looking forward to this year’s London Drinker. He will be much missed.
