Beer & Pub News Round-up
News from North London and beyond...
Looking for a beer festival to go to in the South East? Forthcoming
CAMRA beer festivals include Kingston, Surrey (29 to 30th June 2007), see
website: www.camrasurrey.org.uk
and Canterbury (19 to 21st July). And don’t forget our own North London mini
festival at the Wenlock Arms, N1, 26 / 27th October.
As noted in the last TFP, the Hertfordshire branches have recently put
together an online guide to all of their pubs, including Barnet. Visit
www.pubs.hertsale.org.uk for
details.
A unique pub museum.
If this sounds interesting and you are anywhere near Buckfastleigh in
Devon, I think that you will like this. The Valiant Soldier, 80 Fore Street
(TQ11 0BS), closed when Whitbreads gave up the licence in 1965 as not
viable but the publicans, Mark and Alice Roberts, sat tight, eventually
buying the pub from the brewery.
In 1996 Alice had to leave through ill health and, remarkably, it was
found that both the downstairs bar area and the living quarters were totally
untouched from the night that the pub had closed. Teignbridge District Council
established a trust to buy and manage the site and keep this time capsule
intact. I am not sure of the opening hours but the contact number is 01364
644522.

If you’re reading this copy of the Full Pint in an N16 pub, WELCOME!
This part of north London seems to be moving in the right direction for
lovers of real ale so I thought I would push Full Pint distribution in my
local area. If you are a regular in The Lion, Prince of Wales, Birdcage, Three
Crowns, Coach and Horses, White Hart, Satchmo’s or one of the other established
outlets for the Full Pint (such as the recently refurbished Rochester Castle
where smokers have migrated to the rear of the premises in preparation for the
forthcoming ban) please do write in and tell us your views and recommendations.
You have joined some 5,000+ other readers of our public newsletter to keep
discerning drinkers in touch with the Campaign’s efforts and objectives. If you
want to know more about CAMRA or the north London branch activities please
try and come to a social (hint, wear a beer t-shirt!) you are very welcome or
check out our website. There’s real ale on tap in almost every “traditional” pub
in N16, the only exceptions being one or two shop conversions and a recently
re-opened bar in a part of the district where real ale has not been available for
some time. Why not hunt it down and ask for real ale from the unmarked hand-pump!
Join us on our “Hidden Haringey and Hackney” pub ramble in late August. See our
website listing for details.
