London RIP!
by Gary White, Editor
I was contacted recently by Jackie Kingsley and Michael Shamash of
www.london-rip.com, a website that
may be of interest to many TFP readers. As Jackie and Michael say:
“The site features short articles based on personal reminiscences about
places in London that are now closed, and aspects of the city which have
disappeared. Subjects range from the loss of record shops, to the disappearance
of late night movies, to pub closures.
One recent pub closure that particularly affected us was the Royal Oak in
Temple Fortune. This was the area in which we grew up and its couple of pubs
were the only places where people could meet and have fun. The Golden Eagle
at nearby Henley's Corner closed several years ago and the site (which was
quite substantial and had an attractive garden, complete with a gold sculpture
of an eagle!) is now being used to build a Holiday Inn.
The Royal Oak closed very suddenly a couple of months ago and was converted
into a shop, but local feeling is that redevelopment into flats is inevitable.”
Well worth a look. These pages are of particular interest:
