A Hidden Gem
the Stags Head in Orsman Road, Hoxton
by Laurence Fryer
When you hear the word Stag it can mean lots of things to different people.
For some it's a mighty beast roaming the Scottish glens, to some an impressive
beetle or a '70's British motoring classic or just a pre-marital drink up with
your mates. For me it's the Stag's Head, 55 Orsman Road, N1. Still the words
Mighty, Proud and Classic can apply and in the case of the latter - it's a pub!
Close to Kingsland Road bridge on the Regents Canal this pub is a survivor par
excellence. A classic example of the estate of Truman's (formerly of nearby Brick
Lane), this corner pub now keeps a well tended pint of Greene King IPA. A
pre-Christmas re-visit (following October's London Pubs Group visit) during an
expedition around this area brought home to me just how scarce real ale is in
the southern end of Kingsland road. CAMRA North London branch are planning a
further visit this year. Why not make it a stop off on your next canal side
ramble into the wilds of Hackney?
Cheers, Laurence Fryer.
