Mabel’s Tavern in WC1 is North London 'Pub of the Year' for 2006
by John Cryne

In a very close vote, members of North London Branch have voted Mabel’s Tavern in Mabledon Place, WC1 as their Pub of the Year for 2006.
Operated by Kentish brewer, Shepherd Neame, Mabel’s has been a regular Good Beer Guide entry for a number of years. The name apparently refers to Mabel Macinelly who was born in Dublin. She married into the family who owned Hamilton House in Mabledon Place and became Mabel Hamilton. Not much information is known about Mabel except that she owned a cat called Felix and she died in the 1970s.
Since her death ghostly visits have been known - on one occasion she called the landlady's name repeatedly in the early hours of the morning. She has also been known to operate the dumb waiter that used to stand in the pub - this is a little eerie as the dumb waiter was ripped out of the pub several years ago.
The occupants have heard it in operation in the early hours of the morning but when they investigated there was nothing to be seen. Hopefully it will be mostly corporeal presence when the Branch presents an award to the pub on the 6th June.
