The Full Pint Has It's Fifth Anniversary
Amazingly, it's five years since the first edition of the Full Pint was published - Autumn 1999, just on the eve of the new millennium. And if you recall that time, we were all worried that the Millennium Bug was going to make the modern world grind to an undignified halt . How quaint that idea seems after 9/11 and the second Gulf War!
TFP was launched as an experiment - a black and white, four-sided leaflet, free to real ale establishments in North London. The London Drinker magazine was going through a transitional phase at that time and we wanted our own publication to get across the campaigning message in North London. Happily, London Drinker survived and went from strength-to-strength, as did the Full Pint, first in the black and white, eight-sided format and eventually in high quality colour.
During those five years, we have seen trends such the continued growth of microbreweries but a reduction in choice in some ways, due to the dominance of the PubCos and the globalisation of the brewing industry. In London especially, the demand for residential and commercial space has led to the closure of many pubs. Furthermore, the rise of the gastropub has had a particular impact on the North London area, as our recent WC1 Guide and forthcoming N1 Guides (below) show. I would like to take this opportunity to thank our advertisers and printers for their support over the last five years. Further thanks is due to all the CAMRA members who continue to provide excellent material for the newsletter, which makes my job easy. Here's to the next five!
