North London Pub Updates
by Mike Rose North London Branch Social Secretary
Several pubs in North London have closed recently, they are:
Caledonian Arms, 417 Caledonian Rd N7; Hanley Arms, 440 Hornsey Rd N19; New Pegasus, 109 Green Lanes N16; Railway Tavern, White Hart Lane, N17; Red Lion & Cockerel, N17.
The Three Compasses in Hornsey High St, N8 is reopening under new management, and will be serving London Pride, Courage Directors and draught Bass. This is a welcome refurbishment of a run-down pub and promises to be well worth visiting.
Swan, Cosmo Place WC1 is now owned by the Spirit group, and regularly has several guest ales.
Former Magpie & Stump, N16 is now the Lion: it used to be the Red Lion and there is a magnificent red lion set into the front of the building. It serves Charles Wells Bombardier & Bloomsbury, a house beer which is apparently re-badged Courage Best.
The Jolly Gardeners, 69 Cobourg Street, NW1 has been renamed the Bree Louise. The Eagle, Camden Road NW1 is now Mac Bar. The Wheatsheaf, 48 Camden High St is now Belushi's.
Red Lion, High Holborn, WC1 has just reopened. The governor is from SW1.
Yorkshire Grey, WC1 is boarded up.
Swimmer at the Grafton Arms, 12 Eburne St, N7 has reopened with the new name. Regular beers - Fullers London Pride, ESB, Honeydew (or Jack Frost) plus guest (Fullers Chiswick at time of visit).
The Salisbury, in Green Lanes, N4 has switched from selling Ridleys beers to Fullers, and is planning guest ales in addition (beer is very good, though it still has completely superfluous loud piped music and refuses to have a non-smoking area, even though it is one of the biggest pubs in London – Ed).
Former Bar Latina, 385 Holloway Rd N7, has now reopened with no name displayed, but large sign for Thai food!
