Pub News
Wetherspoon’s have opened one of their Lloyds No.1 outlets in Camden. The first 10 Lloyd’s pubs were acquired from brewer Wolverhampton and Dudley but since then JDW have opened a further 14. The Ice Wharf is the first outlet in London, close to the market overlooking Camden Lock. The Lloyd’s pubs feature music and videos and so have quite a different feel to the standard Spoons outlet, although still with a good range of reasonably priced cask beers.
While in Camden, drinkers might like to try out The Camden Tup at 2/3 Greenland Place. This is a newish pub tucked away behind Camden High St., in former commercial premises. It’s run by the ‘Tup’ free house chain.
The Grafton Arms, 13 Eburne Rd, N7 (Holloway) has been renamed Swimmer at the Grafton Arms after being acquired by a small, nine pub London chain called “Remarkable Restaurants”, all of which sell Essex brewer Ridley’s beers, an unusual beer for London. The chain’s proprietor, Robert Thomas, was a former Olympic swimmer. Does not open lunchtimes Mon to Thu. The same chain has also acquired The Rosemary Branch in Shepperton Rd., N1 and The Shakespeare, Allen Rd, Stoke Newington N16.
Mabels Tavern in Mabelden Place, WC1 has been acquired by Kent brewer Shepherd Neame from Laurel Pubco (ex Whitbread). Full range of Shep’s beers have replaced all other beers on sale.
