Make May Mild
Every May CAMRA celebrates mild as a unique beer style by encouraging everyone to have a pint or two. Mild is so called because it is light in hops producing a light, easy drinking beer that is usually lighter in alcohol than most bitters. It really came into fashion during the industrial revolution when workers wanted to drink large quantities to slate their thirst without getting drunk.
Over the years mild seems to have lost favour with drinkers but it certainly hasn't lost flavour. For those who were lucky enough to attend the recent London Drinker Beer Festival will have found a number of good milds, interestingly most from small independent breweries who have made a real effort to keep this beer style going. There are few pubs in North London that stock milds. You may get the occasional one in a Wetherspoon's pub but your best bet is a visit to the Head of Steam near Euston Station or the Wenlock Arms in N1. Go on do your bit for campaigning and try a pint during May to help this traditional beer style survive. You'll find it will be worth the effort!
