London Drinker Beer Festival 2002

18th London Drinker Beer & Cider Festival

Birthday Cake

This year the London Drinker Beer & Cider Festival is a ripe old 18 and of course we had to have a cake to celebrate the fact!

But at the Festival itself we will have a beer especially produced for the Festival by Pitfield Brewery.

The beer, like all Pitfield's beers, will be organic and it is hoped to have the beer in both draft and bottled form so that people can take away a momento of the event. Two of their other beers will also be on sale: Eco Warrior and Shoreditch Stout, which won SIBA's specialty beer challenge.

But needless to say, there will be other real ales there too, around 50 in total. The Festival is London's longest running annual beer festival in one place. During that time it is estimated that over 311,000 pints of real ale have been sold and that's without the many pints of cider and perry.

The Festival is also proud of its range of imported beers and for the first time ever, to celebrate the Festival's "Europeaness", the imported beer bar will be taking Euros. See the display on the bar for the exchange rates.

To add to the celebrations, the Festival is offering free entry and two free pints to anyone who is reaching the legal drinking age of 18 that week. People just need to bring along some proof of their birthday.

John Conen, spokesman for the Festival said "CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, run the Festival with the aim of encouraging people from all backgrounds and walks of life to come and enjoy good beer. This offer to the birthday boys and girls is a way of enticing them to try some of Britain's best beers and to help ensure that the small British Brewers have customers tomorrow. We have a unique heritage in this country that we need to protect".

John believes that almost 80,000 people have visited the Festival over the years and it has been manned by over 1000 volunteer staff who give up their time free of charge to put on the festival.
