Pub of the Year 2001

The Calthorpe Arms in Grays Inn Road, WC1 is the North London CAMRA branch ‘Pub of the Year' for 2001.

On a beautiful early June evening, branch members and locals gathered to celebrate the award (above). A proud manager Adrian Larner is shown (right) with his wife Tessa during the presentation, receiving their certificate from branch committee member and former CAMRA national Chairman, John Cryne. The pub was a former branch ‘Pub of the Season' in 1999 and this friendly single-bar establishment has been a firm favourite with locals, office workers and journalists for many years. The pub has an upstairs room that is open for food at lunchtimes, the pub is in the Good Food Guide, and is available for bookings in the evenings. Young's took over the Calthorpe Arms around 16 years ago. Adrian joined Young's in 1985, and has been managing the pub for the last 12 years, which must make him one of the longest serving managers in the area. The pub serves Youngs ‘ordinary' bitter, Triple A and Special, with seasonal brews when available. Waggledance was being served at the time of the award and Winter Warmer is a popular addition to the range either side of Christmas.

Adrian is shown (above, working hard) and with Tessa and the Young's Area Manager, Chris Cocker (right).
