Beer and pub news round up
CAMRA is pleased with its victory in the campaign for rate relief for village pubs… The Government has recognised the importance of pubs as essential community amenities. CAMRA is today celebrating success in its campaign for mandatory rate relief to be extended to village pubs. CAMRA spokesman, Mike Benner, said, "This represents an important landmark for the pub industry in England. We have campaigned for several years for rural pubs to be regarded as essential community amenities in the same way as post offices and shops and the Government has finally listened. Pubs are often at the heart of small communities and are every bit as important as other amenities."

At a recent tasting of 15 organic beers conducted by Jeff Evans at Brakspear's brewery, Pitfield Shoreditch Stout took the accolade with top marks, whilst Pitfield's ever-popular East Kent Goldings came 4th.

The Campaign for Real Ale has its sixty-thousandth member. CAMRA welcomed this landmark member to its ranks at the City of York Beer Festival. The 60,000th member was named as Laura Craft from St. John's College, York. Ms Craft signed up with her boyfriend, Jon-Paul Nellist, at the York Beer Festival. The 20 year old student teacher (poor woman - Ed) said 'I'm really happy to have become CAMRA's 60,000th member and feel as though I have become a small part of their history." Laura even met her boyfriend at a previous beer festival and proves that not all real ale drinkers have beards and woolly jumpers! Mike Benner, of CAMRA, said "Our membership has been growing since the 1980's and is at its highest level ever. The more members we have the better we can represent the interests of all Britain's beer drinkers and pub goers." So if you're not a member, why not join (see page 8).

The Old Red Lion on Red Lion St, WC1 has a new manager. The pub currently stocks Greene King brewed - beers IPA and Abbot, plus Ruddle's Best Bitter. This is a reassuringly comfortable pub with limited seating, stand-up drinking and bar stools predominate on the ground floor, but there's an upstairs bar with more seating and an electronic darts board.
