Brewing Again at the Yorkshire Grey
by Gary White
North London CAMRA members attended a special occasion recently. The
'Yorkshire Grey Brewery' in Theobold's Road, WC1 has started brewing
its own beers on the premises again, after brewing had ceased in June
2000.

Local branch members were guests at the re-launch party, which included
sampling the new beers and tours of the brewery. New owners Scottish
& Newcastle have given licensee Rosemary White (pictured right,
with brewer Ramsey Brothwick) an opportunity to save the cellar brewery,
much to the delight of local real ale drinkers.
The names of the regular ales perhaps indicate the patronage by the
local legal community that the pub has traditionally enjoyed:
'Barristers Best Bitter' (3.8 % ABV) and 'QC', a stronger beer
(4.5% ABV), with regular special brews of porters, winter beers and
even a mild planned.
Rosemary White waxed lyrical about the skills of her new brewer and
about the chance to resurrect brewing at the pub.
'We've got an opportunity here, with Ramsey's skill and the support
of local drinkers, we can make this pub successful and sell our own
distinctive beers again.'

Ramsey, a graduate of Heriot Watt University's brewing degree course,
has obviously put a lot of time and effort into ensuring that the
brewery is in top condition and regularly goes to Yorkshire to
acquire the correct yeast from a 'well known brewery'. Judging by our
taste buds on the night, he's on to a good thing! Good luck to all
at the Yorkshire Grey.
Gary White.
