Pub Preservation in North London
Mark Hoile, Branch Pub Preservation Officer
The North London Branch covers a significant part of the London area which
includes some of the better known localities of London such as Islington,
Camden, Highgate, Hampstead, and Kings Cross. The Branch therefore has a
large number of pubs offering an interesting and rich variety of historical
interest and architectural style. Better known examples of which are 'Cittie
Of Yorke', WC1; 'Hope and Anchor', N1; 'Magdala Tavern', NW3; 'Flask', N6;
'Holly Bush', NW3; 'Crockers', NW8, and many more. Forthcoming issues of the
'The Full Pint' will focus on pubs of interest, and those that are under
threat from significant alteration, or change of use. A current example of
which is the 'Drapers Arms', Barnsbury Street, N1, which is under threat of
closure for conversion to a private residence.
I would therefore welcome any news which is relevant to pubs within the North
London area: photographs for publication will also be gratefully received.
Finally, an example of a campaigning success during 1998 was the proposed
alteration of the much loved 'Holly Bush' in Hampstead. The branch in
conjunction with local groups prevented rebuilding works which would have
destroyed the character of this famous pub.
