Large pub amongst local shops in residential area. Refurbished August 2007 to create a partly partitioned off restaurant (24 covers); settees introduced elsewhere. Beer prices have risen sharply. Big tent for smokers in garden. Number of TV screens reduced.

Caledonian Deuchars IPA; Charles Wells Bombardier; guest beer

When this famous pub reclaimed its original name (from 'Scruffy Murphys') a few years ago, an effort was made to promote real ale with casks behind the bar. These have now made way for wine and spirits. However, a third handpump for a guest beer was added in 2009. Front L shaped bar with plenty of TV screens and quite loud piped music (Friday night). Very large back garden (children welcome) and covered courtyard area with sofas. Deuchars is £3.20 a pint. Food served Noon-1Opm and Sunday roast 'till 6pm. Quiz Thursdays. Live music Saturdays. A chunk of the whetstone, which is thought to give the area its name, is located on the pavement outside. Legend has it that soldiers sharpened their swords on it before the Battle of Barnet (1471).

Greene King IPA

Three name changes/facelifts in a mere 17 months for a pub that for many years was the 'Bull and Butcher'. The prefix 'New' was added in October 2007, when the pool table room at the back was turned into a well equippped 250 capacity live rock band venue with free jazz sessions Sunday afternoons. Renamed 'Real Music Club' in September 2008, the latest incarnation (March 2009) sees an austere white painted frontage and transformation to a Club/DJ venue open till 2am at weekends.

Time warp locals pub with an interior that probably hasn't changed much in 30 years. Long may it survive. Guest beer added September 2008. Island bar serves lounge area to right and darts/TV area to left. Secluded garden. Jacket Potatoes, Ploughman's Lunch and sandwiches available Noon - 6pm Mon-Fri. Sea food stall out front at weekends.
